There are several species of Hoodia. Hoodia
Gordonii in particular, is a rare plant that grows in
South Africa. Hoodia Gordonii is difficult to
grow and only grows under certain climatic conditions that the South
African region offers. It takes approximately 5 to 7 years for the
Hoodia succulent to mature and provide appetite suppressing qualities.
And most importantly, only Hoodia Gordonii has
the molecule that effectively suppresses one’s appetite.
Because of the rising demand for Hoodia and the fast depleting supply of
the real stuff, many companies are selling Hoodia grown in China,
Mexico, even down in Texas, and it has become clear that these other
varieties do not contain the active ingredient that has been identified
in the South African Hoodia plants. The BBC reported in 2003 that it
tested the “leading brand of Hoodia pills” sold in the U.S. and found no
discernible evidence that the pills contained any active Hoodia. Some
tests have revealed Hoodia material which was clearly mixed with
cellulose, saw dust or Nopal cactus.
Before you purchase any product containing Hoodia, make sure they use a
reputable source. Do they have proof they are Certified Pure from South
Africa and that their product is created from South African government
approved Hoodia Gordonii? Have they had their
Hoodia tested by independent laboratories to verify the quality and
purity of the raw materials used?
